Much history is concealed in the dedications of our churches. Many questions spring to mind. Why were some saints so popular? Why did fashions in dedications change through time? How far did such fashions vary from area to area? Were there truly local saints? Dr Cooper, with long experience as editor of the Victoria County History for Essex, has deployed her great knowledge of the county in a detailed study of such questions. The background to her work is an account of the saints concerned and of the history of church dedication. The backbone of her discussion of the problems and possibilities is a gazetteer of all 420 parishes of medieval Essex, giving for each what is known of the dedication or dedications of the parish church and of additional cults associated with the church, when these are discoverable. Her learned work is both an important contribution to the study of English church dedications in general, and a uniquely well-informed account of a major, and increasingly fascinating, aspect of the history of Essex and of its parishes.
