A long-established leader in liberal arts chemistry, John Suchocki's Conceptual Chemistry continues to take a student-centered approach in the new Fifth Edition. This robust program uses a conversational writing style to engage and involve non-science majors, helping them visualize the behavior of atoms and molecules to understand our macroscopic environment. With a focus on fundamental concepts - not mathematical models - and supported by a dynamic media program, Conceptual Chemistry, Fifth Edition helps build a base from which non-science majors can view the world around them more perceptively.

Each chapter opens with Suchocki’s hallmark Hands-On Chemistry activities. Performed using common household ingredients and equipment, these activities provide hands-on conceptual exposure outside the formal laboratory setting. Main Idea statements open each chapter, encapsulating the primary message and providing students with an immediate sense for the overarching idea they will read about in the chapter. In-the-margin Reading Check questions teach students to pay attention to key points as they read and to reflect on them at the end of each section.   In-text Concept Checks pose a question followed by an immediate answer. These questions reinforce ideas just presented, before a student moves on to new concepts, and help students synthesize ideas from across the chapter.  Calculation Corners in selected chapters allow students to practice the quantitative reasoning skills needed to perform chemical calculations. None of the calculations involves skills beyond fractions, percentages, or basic algebra.  Each chapter includes short For Your Information paragraphs in the margins. These paragraphs highlight interesting information relating to the adjacent chapter content  Explain This questions activate prior knowledge, illustrate intriguing application of concepts, and serve as the launching point for classroom discussions. Expanded Contextual Chemistry essays highlighting chemistry concepts within the context of society now follow each chapter, with correlated questions in the TestBank. End-of-chapter reviews follow Bloom’s taxonomy of learning: —   Summary of Terms (Knowledge) —   Reading Check Questions (Comprehension) —   Think and Do (Hands-On Application) —   Think and Solve (Mathematical Application) —   Think and Compare (Analysis) —   Think and Explain (Synthesis) —   Think and Discuss (Evaluation) —   Readiness Assurance Test (RAT)

New Chapter 4 discussion of atomic orbitals, energy level diagrams, and electron configurations helps students understand the structure of the atom as well as atomic behavior. Concepts are summarized in a revised discussion of Pauling's “argonian” shell model, which is now called the noble gas shell model to distinguish it from the traditional shell model used to describe principal quantum states. For the non-science student, this model provides valuable insight into the nature of the periodic table, electron-dot structures, and chemical bonding. Other content changes include: discussion of wastewater treatment shifted from Chapter 7 to Chapter 16; new material on ocean acidification (Chapter 10); section on the greenhouse effect and global climate change now appears in Chapter 16 where it fits with the strong focus on atmospheric chemistry; addition of angiogenesis inhibitors and other monoclonal antibodies (Chapter 14); new description of neonicotinoids, now the most widely used insecticides (Chapter 15); updated and cross-referenced Chapters 16 and 17, including a new subsection on the aging North American power grid. Expanded Contextual Chemistry essays highlighting chemistry concepts within the context of society now follow each chapter, with correlated questions in the TestBank. Updated essays include: Extending the Quality of Human Life, Mercury Emissions, Pseudoscience New! Chapter 1 Contextual Chemistry essay uses the topic of global climate change to highlight the role of science in society, and sets the stage for a more thorough discussion of global climate change in Chapter 16. New! Chapter 5 Contextual Chemistry essay discusses the issues involved in hydraulic fracturing and how this technology has boosted the United States to become the world’s leading producer of natural gas. New! Chapter 15 Contextual Chemistry essay on genetically modified foods was developed out of material that appeared in Chapter 15 of the fourth edition. Updates throughout strengthen readability and reflect current events, such as the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and recent advances in science and technology, such as the success of immunotherapies against cancer Revised presentation of key topics includes science (Ch. 1), the shell model (Ch. 4) and molecular geometry (Ch. 6). Learning objectives in each chapter begin with an active verb that specifies what the student should be able to do after studying that section, such as “Calculate the energy released by a chemical reaction.”  These section-specific learning objectives are further integrated into the Mastering Chemistry online tutorial/assessment tool. NEW! Explain This questions activate prior knowledge, illustrate intriguing applications of concepts, and serve as the launching point for classroom discussions. Answers appear in the instructor’s manual as well as in the instructors-only area of ConceptualChemistry.com. Updated end-of-chapter materials include: questions sorted by learning objectives and organized in a grid for ease of reference; hands-on chemistry activities now called “Confirm the Chemistry” to highlight their important role in the learning cycle; more challenging “Think and Explain” questions organized by section number to facilitate assigning of homework. New! Chemical Connections questions in the margins ask students to find the connection between two seemingly unrelated materials or processes. For example, How is your sense of smell connected to temperature? Answers appear in the instructor’s manual as well as in the instructors-only area of ConceptualChemistry.com.
