Playing rather than signification marks the performing arts when seen as theatrical events. Contexts rather than styles distinguish one kind of artistic experience from another. Eventness has been written for new scholars and students who are not yet familiar with the concept of the Theatrical Event. It can also be read as a summary of Willmar Sauter's theoretical investigations in various articles and books over the last decade. The principle of pleasure brings back players and audiences to new events. Not all theatrical experiences, however, happen in theatres, nor are they always pleasurable.

Eventness is a word which describes distinctly what makes theatre a special form of artistic communication. This book is an attempt to expand the notion of the theatrical event and to negotiate a concept which builds on the performer's and the spectator's sensory experience of a theatrical situation.
