Biographical note
Charlotte Lennox (1729-1804) was born in Gibralter, lived for a time in New York and later became a ladies' companion in London. An unsuccessful actor, she wrote two collections of poetry, five novels and two plays. Samuel Johnson thought her superior to his other female literary friends, such as Hannah More and Fanny Burney.
Arabella has been raised by her family in complete seclusion. As a result, she has resorted to reading romantic literature to escape the emptiness of her life, but has become caught up in a fantasy world, where knights in shining armour really do rescue beautiful princesses from dragons.
