From the preface on I found this book to be an informative and very worthwhile read. . . In particular, the authors have done an excellent job of not only portraying but also linking to common beginnings the breadth of applications to which GIS-T is now being put. . . A strength of the book is its coverage of this past work and the authors' ability to place this work in useful context. . . A pleasing aspect of the book is the way the authors have managed to relate specific topics in the earlier chapters on principles to these same topics within the last four applications chapters. . .Given its coverage, the book should also encourage new insights among those of us already immersed in GIS-T in one arena or another, as well provide as an excellent reference to a great deal of past work. Finally, Oxford University Press has done a good job on the production of the book, including presentation of the many equations and figures distributed throughout the text.

The range and depth of material covered is extremely impressive. . .If you are a GIS researcher interested in transportation applications or if you are a transportation analyst wondering what GIS can do for you, this is the book to buy. . .Miller and Shaw are to be congratulated on producing a wonderful textbook for a graduate-level course in GIS-T and for providing an excellent demonstration of the utility of GIS in the transportation area. It should be read by many both in GIS and in transportation planning and engineering. --International Journal of Geographical Information Science "Acknowledging that 'despite the hype about telecommuting, teleshopping, and virtual entertainment, we still sit in traffic jams ...,' Miller (geography, U. of Utah, Salt Lake City) and Shaw (geography, U. of Tennessee, Knoxville) nonetheless look to high-tech solutions to transportation problems via applications of Geographic Information Systems for Transportation (GIS-T). A table showing the increase in the number of theses/dissertations on GIS and transportation from 1982-95 reinforces the message that this is indeed a hot topic. Assuming basic knowledge of GIS, the authors discuss scientific principles from capturing to analyzing digital geographic information about transportation infrastructure and systems; and apply the GIS-T toolkit to ground transportation planning, intelligent transportation systems, environmental and hazards analysis, and logistics."--SciTech Book News "From the preface on I found this book to be an informative and very worthwhile read. . .
