Biographical note

Karen M. Sowers (MSW, Florida State University; PhD, Florida State University) is Beaman Professor and dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Nationally known for her research and scholarship in the areas of juvenile justice, child welfare, cultural diversity, international social work practice, and social work education, she has served as a founding member of the Journal of Research on Social Work Practice and was the founding coeditor of Best Practices in Mental Health: An International Journal. Bruce A. Thyer, LCSW (MSW, University of Georgia; PhD, University of Michigan) is professor of social work and former dean of the School of Social Work at Florida State University. He has served on the faculties of the University of Michigan and the University of Georgia.
