Under his leadership, The Mind Trust has raised $25 million to advance the work of education entrepreneurs in Indianapolis and accelerate positive change. Since its launch in 2006, The Mind Trust has supported the Indianapolis launch of 11 high-impact entrepreneurial education ventures, supported critical research and policy work designed to improve the climate for education innovation, and garnered widespread attention from local and national media. Previously, Mr. Harris served as former Mayor Bart Peterson's Charter Schools Director, where he built one of the nation's most highly regarded charter school offices; the initiative received Harvard University's prestigious Innovations in American Government Award in 2006. BART PETERSON, a founding member and board chair of The Mind Trust, served two terms as mayor of Indianapolis, the nation's 12th-largest city, from 2000 to 2007. He also served as president of the National League of Cities in 2007. As mayor, Peterson became the only mayor in America with the authority to create new schools by issuing charters. He was responsible for 16 charter schools and won Harvard University's prestigious Innovations in American Government Award for the initiative in 2006. During the 2008-09 school year, Peterson was a distinguished visiting professor of public policy at Ball State University, USA. He continues as a fellow with the University's Bowen Center for Public Affairs, and is now the senior vice president of corporate affairs and communications for Eli Lilly and Company.
