Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills is designed to promote the development of study skills for students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, regardless of levels of ability or achievement.
Summary of contents Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills is structured in eight sessions with activities for students at both KS3 and KS4. They are not designed to be delivered in eight 'lessons' but rather presented as a bank of resources to be utilised over the course of a term, preferably in the lead into an examination period, for example, SATs or GCSEs. The resources can also easily be adopted for use during other stages of the academic year in order to support students of all ages in improving learning and study skills. The eight-session student programme is structured as follows: * Understanding coursework and schoolwork * Organisation, time management and planning * Learning to Learn: preferred learning styles * Revision strategies and techniques (I): mind mapping for KS3 & KS4 * Revision Strategies and Techniques (II): subdividing, minimising, storytelling and recipe cards (KS4); acronyms, questions, key words, post-its (KS3) * Revision Strategies and Techniques (III): walking the line, movie review, teaching to learn (KS4); design a poster, SEGE mnemonic, the burger plan (KS3) * Revision Strategies and Techniques (IV): discussion group, describe and draw, empathic learner, pass master (KS4); file cards, spidergram, mnemonics, constructing a balanced written argument (KS3) * Self-review and dealing with exams Each part of the programme includes detailed facilitator's notes describing the nature, content and delivery of each activity. There are a wide range of practical and written tasks which incorporate a range of learning styles and teaching approaches. Supporting appendices include the following: 1. Information sheet for parents/carers. 2. Information sheet for staff. 3. Information sheet for students. The information sheets are intended as an introduction to the topic of study skills and aim to highlight the rationale for the programme alongside briefly outlining the contents. The PowerPoint three presentations provide a fuller picture of the programme and aim to ensure that parents/carers, teachers and students alike understand and are familiar with the key aims of this resource.
