This is a study of the economic consequences of Australian travel and tourism in the context of world people movement in all its forms: inbound, outbound, and domestic. This book discusses the difficulties caused by the composition of the industry and Australia's problem in balancing the provision of facilities with tourism demand. It goes on to examine in detail where people, including Australian, travel with particular focus on the Far Eastern and Pacific regions. The money spent is measured by national group and purpose of travel (eg business and convention travel, backpackers, sports spectators) with analysis of their economic value. The economic impact of travel and tourism on Australia is examined and how it affects particular regions. The final sections consider investment needs, examining funding sources and investor confidence. Looking forward, the challenges of providing accommodation, planning procedures and government responses are discussed. Economic terminology is defined clearly and the text is accompanied by tables setting out relevant facts and figures.
