From time immemorial there has been a system of paths along the coasts of Bornholm. They were used by beach watchmen. In bad weather and at night they patrolled the shores to check whether there were any ships in distress, and at night they carried candles and lanterns to warn them about the perilous rocky coastlines. This helped the ships to avoid the beaches. Nevertheless many ships were still wrecked, so there were also many rescue operations. But on Bornholm ‘a good wreck was not to be sneezed at.’ There were often precious commodities aboard the wrecked ships
