Biographical note

William Gilmore Simms (1806 1870) was a poet, novelist, historian, and politician from the American South. David S. Shields is the Carolina Distinguished Professor and the McClintock Professor of Southern Letters at the University of South Carolina and chairman of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation.
