After World War II, the Royal Netherlands Navy ordered new ships to counter the growing threat coming from the Soviet submarines. These ships were classified as ASW destroyers (onderzeebootjagers), but close to contemporary destroyers in terms of specifications. The national industry designed and constructed two classes of these ships. Drenthe was of the more capable Type 47B series.

Biografisk notat

Jantinus Mulder started his career in the graphic industry and is currently a publisher at Lanasta (Walburg Pers). He is a specialist in the model building of naval ships. He builds models, and has written about model building in various (trade) magazines and books. Henk Visser is the author of Royal Netherlands Navy - photos and facts and was an employee at the Dutch Navy Museum.
