This book explores the online behavior and safeguarding of children with special education needs (SEN) in the digital world. Founded in research which evidences key stakeholder perspectives, this book informs and guides stakeholders towards sensibly balancing risk and opportunities online with an understanding that SEN children may face some unique challenges that can place them at greater risk. To develop a child-centered approach, the authors employ an ecosystems theory approach which considers child development as a system of interrelated relationships affected by multiple levels of surrounding environment, drawing upon Bronfenbrenner's seminal work and positioning the research within the field of education.

“This essential book expertly navigates the complex terrain of digital safety for children with special education needs (SEN). Drawing upon rigorous research and stakeholder perspectives, the authors illuminate the unique challenges these children face online, where they may be particularly vulnerable. What sets this work apart is its application of Bronfenbrenner's ecosystems theory, which considers child development through interrelated relationships affected by multiple environmental levels. This theoretical framework enables a nuanced, holistic approach to understanding digital behaviours and risks. The authors skilfully balance acknowledging potential dangers with recognizing digital opportunities, avoiding overprotection while ensuring appropriate safeguards. Their child-centred approach empowers stakeholders—educators, parents, and policymakers—to make informed decisions that respect children's autonomy while providing necessary support. For anyone working with SEN children in our increasingly digital world, this book offers invaluable insights and practical guidance toward creating safer, more inclusive online experiences that support their unique developmental needs.” (Emma Bond, University of Suffolk, Ipswich, UK)
