Frameworks are the foundation of good scholarship. They structure, organize and communicate research, underpin individual studies and shape the field of study as a whole. This book provides the first comprehensive and systematic review and critique of frameworks for tourism research. Theoretical, conceptual, analytical and integrative frameworks are all covered in detail, with the features, use, strengths and limitations of each form discussed and illustrated using a wide range of examples and applications across the field of tourism studies.

Frameworks for Tourism Research Douglas G. Pearce Frameworks are the foundation of good scholarship. They structure, organize and communicate research, underpin individual studies and shape the field of study as a whole. This book provides the first comprehensive and systematic review and critique of frameworks for tourism research. Chapters examining theoretical, conceptual, analytical and integrative frameworks are followed by a review of the most commonly used forms of schematic frameworks: matrices, process frameworks, systems and networks. The features, uses, strengths and limitations of each type of framework are discussed and illustrated using a wide range of examples and applications across the field of tourism studies. This structured and systematic treatment of frameworks provides tourism researchers at all levels - from students and beginners through to more established scholars - with a critical guide to understanding and applying frameworks that will enhance their own research and enable greater appreciation of their use by others. The book comprises ten chapters. The introduction explains the motivations for the work and contains a short summary of the whole work. Chapters 2 to 5, the core part of the book, describe theoretical, conceptual, analytical, and integrative frameworks. The author's idea is that these frameworks constitute a series of steps enabling a path for any systematic investigation. The researcher starts by expressly stating the bases for interpreting and understanding the phenomenon under study (theoretical framework) and formulating a research problem. The subsequent step consists of the identification of the main concepts and factors to be examined and the relationships that bind them (conceptual frameworks). After that, the main aspects are operationalized by specifying the structure and the sequence deemed necessary for the analysis of the data and the presentation of the outcomes (analytical frameworks). This is a quite important task, as the author notes, especially when multiple methods are to be employed or when the analysis involves numerous steps. On many occasions, theories, concepts, and methods originating in different disciplines may be called into play. In these cases, integrative frameworks are useful for building a rational and effective combination. As the reader can well imagine, these frameworks are especially suitable in a complex and diversified field like tourism. The book is well organized and written. It is, essentially, a vast critical literature review on the subject, but that adds quite a number of rationalizations and schematizations (more than seventy pictures and tables) to the dozens of proposals presented by many tourism scholars in the last decades. It is a good foundation and a complement to the different and more specialized books on research methodologies and is important background reading for all those interested in researching one of the many aspects that characterize the tourism field. A good introduction to research for graduate students, it is also a worthwhile work for many experienced researchers, academic or practitioners.
