Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Mandela served 27 years in prison on Robben Island and was released in 1990. He won South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994 and became the first black president of the country.
