As I sit here, writing the introduction to my second book (a sentence I thought I’d never type), I’m reflecting on my creative journey over the last four years and feel an amazing sense of gratitude for an incredible transformation of my life. As some of you may know (and for those that don’t), I’ve always been an “artistic” person, from my love of art and design, and appreciation of culture and history, to my somewhat eclectic dress sense! As a child, I was never happier than when painting, drawing, or making, and this is something that has stuck with me through my teens, 20s, 30s, and now into my 40s! My creativity has had times of abundance during my school, college, and university days, where I was lucky enough to gain a degree in textile design and surface pattern, through to 20-plus years of dormancy. As some of you may have experienced, life can get in the way, and a corporate day job led me away from my true artistic calling. Fast forward to lockdown 2020, when a brief period of furlough allowed me the time and headspace to begin creating again, and I’ve never looked back! Art is something that morphed from a mindful hobby (and a way to calm my busy brain) to a way of life, and, I’m delighted to say, now my vocation. I’ve become an author, designed my debut fabric collection, and licensed my work across the globe. As I write these words I am in my last few weeks of employment in the corporate world, before I take the exciting (and slightly terrifying) leap into life as a full-time artist, illustrator, tutor, and writer! Since finishing my last book I’ve explored and experimented with a host of different media, which I can’t wait to share with you here. From crackle paste to salt, and collage to gold thread, I’ve (literally) embellished my watercolor work with a host of exciting new techniques. I’ll be sharing my favorite materials, top tips, and 13 new projects with you to explore. I hope this book will take your work to heady new heights and allow you to create something new, exciting, and – most of all – fun! Happy painting!
