David Bates has brought together a veritable Who’s Who of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman studies. In engaging and well-illustrated prose, they bring the events of 1066 to life from a range of perspectives – governmental, archaeological, military, social. A book for scholar and layperson alike, this is the introduction to the Conquest the twenty-first century has been waiting for!

- Levi Roach,

This collection of papers by leading scholars offers countless new insights into the Conquest of 1066, its contexts and its impacts. It will be an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the subject.

- Jeremy Ashbee,

Specialist research has changed perceptions of the Conquest fundamentally since the Domesday centenary publications of 1986, but synthesis has not kept pace. With this new collection, it is again possible to take stock. The fifteen essays range widely across historical, social, artistic, architectural and historiographical themes, and view 1066 through the lens of major but essentially evolutionary change in both England and Normandy across the eleventh century.

- John Blair,
