Ben Cowell was awarded a starred first in history from the University of East Anglia and then received his PhD in history from the University of Nottingham. He has recently moved from a job as Head of Social and Economic Research at English Heritage to work for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. He lives in Newport, Essex.Ben Cowell traces the rise of heritage consciousness over the last 300 years, from its origins in the writings of the seventeenth - and eighteenth - century antiquarians to the founding of the first heritage organizations in the nineteenth century and on to the present day.
