Hannnah Arendt (1906-1975) was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1906. She studied philosophy, receiving a doctorate at the University of Heidelberg. Arendt fled Germany in 1933 and went to France, before arriving in the United States in 1941, taking American citizenship ten years later. She taught at universities including Princeton, Columbia, Berkeley and Yale, and wrote numerous works of political theory.
