Verhoeven and Strömqvist’s purpose to open up new perspectives in the study of narrative development in a multilingual context is certainly accomplished in their book. Their volume is a highly valuable, rich, and thoughtful collection of inspiring empirical studies, and the work captured in this volume will be an excellent point of reference for future investigations of the development of text production, including narrative discourse, in multilingual contexts.

Although its key readership is researchers and educators in the fields of bilingualism and child language development, this volume will also be of interest to language educators and scholars in second language acquisition because it foregrounds the complex nature of narrative competence, highlights cross-linguistic differences in narrative construction, an offers intriguing directions we can take to examine the development of narrative competence in adult L2 users.
