This study guide is intended to accompany the ninth edition of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: An Introduction. It began as a series of worksheets distributed to students in class and gradually expanded to include brief explanations of course content and additional practice exercises. This material was eventually linked together with reminders and review sheets. As the study guide evolved, it became more generic and all-encompassing. As a result, the study guide is of potential use to any instructor of introductory linguistics using Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: An Introduction.
Each chapter in the study guide begins with a list of the main topics found in that chapter. Each of these topics correspond to a section heading within Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: An Introduction. This is intended to make it easier for students to reference material in the text for more in-depth discussion and explanation.
- An entirely new and updated chapter on semantics.
- A first-ever chapter on bilingualism, with special focus on the situation in Canada.
- Access to an alternate version of the syntax chapter - on the companion website - which focuses on the techniques of basic syntactic description that can be used independently of generative grammar.
- Revision of individual chapters to update and clarify their content, as well as offer revised end-of-chapter exercises that allow students to work through some of the concepts discussed in the chapter.
- A revised Study Guide offering practice exercises covering all 16 chapters of the textbook, accompanied by an instructor answer key.
