`It is a volume that is essential to read. For sheer creativity and ingenuity, Ward is one of the greatest systematicians working in Britain today.
Reviews in Religion and Theology
Since first Thomas Aquinas defined theology as revelation, or the rational elucidation of revealed truth, the idea of revelation has played a fundamental role in the history of western theology. This book provides a new and detailed investigation of the concept, examining its nature, sources, and limitations in all five of the major scriptural religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
The first part of the book discusses the nature of theology, and expounds the comparative method as the most useful and appropriate for the modern age. Part Two focuses on the nature of religion and its early historical manifestations, whilst the third part of the book goes on to consider the idea of revelation as found in the great canonical traditions of the religions of the world. Part Four develops the distinctively Christian idea of revelation as divine self-expression in history. The final part of the book discusses how far the idea of revelation must be revised or adapted in the light of modern historical and scientific thought, and proposes a new and positive theology of revelation for the future. The book includes discussions of the work of most major theologians and scholars in the study of religion - Aquinas, Tillich, Barth, Temple, Frazer, and Evans Pritchard - and should be of interest to many scholars and students of comparative religion and theology, and anthropologists.

`a project in several volumes that is systematic in its coverage of belief ... remarkable project ... Ward engages critically with a range of sources ... Ward presents a persuasive picture of the physical universe as 'an expression of the mind and heart of God' ... he has illuminated a range of difficult issues where Christians, including theologians, feel particularly unsure ... The three volumes so far published are a remarkable achievement and seal Keith
Ward's reputation as the most productive and constructive theologian writing in English today.'
Paul Avis, Anglican Theological Review, LXXXII:1
`The range of Ward's study is impressive...Here is the Regius Professor in risky creative mood, and it represents a considerable advance on his more popular A vision to Pursue.'
Theology
`betrays a greater degree of religious dogmatism than is now normal among western intellectuals. ... Ward offers a devout defence of the Christian outlook.'
Times Higher Education Supplement
`If you want to expand your thinking on religion in a direction which takes into account historical and modern scientific methods then this book will be a valuable addition to your library.'
The Reader

`With perfect timing Keith Ward ... enters the fray ... the distinctive feature of his treatment here is the inter-faith emphasis ... It is a volume that is essential to read. For sheer creativity and ingenuity, Ward is one of the greatest systematicians working in Britain today.'
Reviews in Religion and Theology
`Specialists will inevitably have reservations about various parts of Ward's depiction, but this should not detract from the wide learning and energetic scope of his grand vision.'
Journal of Contemporary Religion
`excellent latest book by the Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Oxford ... The comparisons offered are among the most interesting and valuable aspects of his model of an open, comparative, theology.'
Rev. John Kerr, Religion and Philosophy
Its openness to revision and its resistance to the old conservative/ radical labels, makes for refreshing reading...the huge field of interrelated issues which is covered remains a masterly achievement. It is treated with clarity and a notable absence of unnecessary mystification...Keith Ward offers his thinking about God without obfuscation- and that may be another reason why he is able to keep it on the move.
Masterley and wide-ranging reflections on a rich diversity of ideas about the nature and role of claims to revelation in religious faith and theological understanding...the contributors are well chosen and many of them have written elsewhere on the same topics. It is the collection into one volume of these various views and subjects which makes the present volume an attractive one indeed...Ward's study presents in a clear and thought-provoking manner a large
number of important reflections that deserve to be considered carefully...Ward's discussions are stimulating and searching as they illuminate the complex nature of claims about revelation.
`major new study ... An example of clear, balanced reflection and a product of mature scholarship, this book deserves to be read by all who engage in systematic reflection on the nature of revelation.'
Marcel Sarot, Bijdragen, tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie 57 (1996) nr. 4
`Keith Ward's book signals a most ambitious and important project ... he is to be congratulated on his wide coverage and familiarity with so many primary and secondary sources and his clear and salient outlines. Ward's book is provocative, full of insight and vision, and his project is entirely worthwhile. I look forward to the next volume of his pilgrimage which should also allow him to clarify various unresolved problems.'
Gavin D'Costa, Journal of Theological Studies, Vol. 47, No. 1, Apr '96
