Like previous editions of this text, the current 4th edition is a hugely useful resource for students, practitioners and academics. It’s brevity and accessibility are a major selling point. Specifically, the text is a rich and sophisticated entry point for anyone studying and/or exploring the United Kingdom constitution.

- Professor Conall Mallory, Queen’s University, Belfast

This is a clear, accessible introduction to the UK constitution, which those seeking an overview of or a way into studying the topic no doubt find very useful.

- Professor Mark Elliot, University of Cambridge

I like the current edition, and indeed the previous editions – this book provides a very valuable overview of key ideas, topics, sources and debates in the UK constitution. It gives a good overall picture of the constitution, and is an excellent background or further reading text for students..

- Professor Michael Gordon, University of Liverpool

Review of Previous Editions - [The] written style is admirably clear, conversational and free from jargon. The chapter discussions are punchy and not too drawn out… It will be of immense interest to any-one with a general interest in UK law, politics and history.

- Stuart Lakin, Times Higher Education

Review of Previous Editions - Signposting is clear and helpful. The prose is clear and authoritative. A very valuable introductory survey.

- Andrew McDonald, The Law and Politics Book Review

“[The] written style is admirably clear, conversational and free from jargon … It will be of immense interest to anybody with a general interest in UK law, politics and history.” Times Higher Education

This engaging, authoritative text has, since its very first edition, maintained its position as the market-leading introduction to the constitution of the United Kingdom. Adopting a thematic approach, it discusses questions of history, sources and conventions, the role of the Crown, Parliament and the electoral system, government and the executive, the judiciary, and the territorial distribution of power. In addition, it offers analysis of the evolution of the UK's historic non-codified constitution, its strengths and perceived weaknesses, and of reform initiatives. The new edition systematically examines the impact of the recent developments, including how COVID changed how government operated, the revolving door of Prime Ministers, the election of the Labour government, and the accession of King Charles III.

Though introductory in approach, it does not shy away from the complexity of the constitutional landscape in the United Kingdom. It provides a contextual overview of the principles, doctrines and institutions that underpin the elusive constitution, allowing students of law and politics, both from the UK and abroad, to develop an informed view of how it actually works.

New edition of the leading introductory textbook on the constitution of the United Kingdom

Accessible, contextual introductions to the
constitutional systems of the world.
In the era of globalisation issues of constitutional law and good governance are being seen increasingly as vital issues in all types of society. Since the end of the cold war there have been dramatic developments in democratic and legal reform, and post-conflict societies are also in the throes of reconstructing their governance systems. Even societies already firmly based on constitutional governance and the rule of law have undergone constitutional change and experimentation with new forms of governance; and their constitutional systems are increasingly subjected to comparative analysis and transplantation. Constitutional texts for practically every country in the world are now easily available on the internet. However, texts which enable one to understand the true context, purposes, interpretation, and incidents of a constitutional system are much harder to locate, and are often extremely detailed and descriptive. This series seeks to provide scholars and students with accessible introductions to the constitutional systems of the world, supplying both a road map for the novice and, at the same time, a deeper understanding of the key historical, political, and legal events which have shaped the constitutional landscape of each country. Each book in the series deals with a single country or a group of countries with a common constitutional history, and each author is an expert in their field.

PRAISE FOR THE SERIES
"This superb series provides sophisticated and up-to-date introductions to the major constitutional systems of the world, accurately and clearly describing not only the current constitutional rules and structures, but also (and equally importantly) setting them in their historical and cultural context…There is no other series of guides quite like it" William B Ewald, Professor of Law and Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania Law School

"... ideal for undergraduate and introductory law school courses on comparative constitutional law" William E Butler, Journal of Comparative Law

"I just wanted to congratulate you on your series "Constitutional Systems of the World"… by including countries which normally don't get attention, you do a great service to a more modern comparative constitutionalism. I hope that this collection will grow!" Dr Jörg Menzel, Associate Professor, University of Bonn, Germany
