Advances in the treatment of bipolar disorders have been sufficiently rapid that recent efforts to summarize management options for clinicians, such as the 2002 revision of the American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for Bipolar Disorders (2002), quickly become outdated. In this book the authors review recent developments, emphasizing interventions supported by controlled studies. Recent research has not only helped the authors better understand the utility of older medications and has provided clinicians with important new treatment options for bipolar disorders. Efforts to provide evidence-based care have been substantively facilitated by data from the recent controlled trials described in this volume. Although progress has been encouraging, clinical needs continue to exceed the treatment options supported by controlled data, and additional research is required to allow further progress in addressing the challenges facing clinicians caring for patients with bipolar disorders.

Despite works published as recently as 2002, the continuing rapid evolution of new medications and adjunctive psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder has made the concise Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorder essential for today's clinicians who want to stay abreast of the latest developments in treating this complex and challenging mental illness.
Bringing together the work of distinguished experts with meticulous references and numerous tables and illustrations, Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorder offers a very timely and exciting perspective on new ways to treat bipolar disorder. In seven succinct chapters, contributors review recent developments—emphasizing interventions supported by controlled studies—in the treatment and maintenance treatment of patients with acute mania and acute bipolar depression as well as maintenance therapy and the management of, rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, and acute bipolar depression. Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorder concludes by discussing age developmental and gender differences as emerging factors in the treatment of children, adolescents, and women with bipolar disorder.
This volume helps clinicians to better understand the utility of both older medications and important new treatment options as it highlights the need for additional research to ensure further progress in overcoming the challenges of caring for patients with bipolar disorder.
