If you have a child who is just mastering reading then one of the first authors to look to these days is Sue Mongredien. In every book she delivers exactly what the emerging reader needs. Firstly and most importantly, it's always a good, exciting story and Penguin Peril is no exception. There's excitement, suspense and mystery - exactly what the young reader needs. They have to get the idea that reading is fun! * The Book Bag book reviews website *<br />This book isn't as pink and glittery as I expected from the cover. It's an adventure quest where Molly, a girl who secretly turns into a mermaid and drops into a magical world, helps save ocean creatures from the Dark Queen using special powers granted to her by a pendant. The characters in the book are well drawn; particularly Molly, whose bravery prevents disaster. It's a great story (I loved the pendant with its sea-creature powers). I think a hungry 7+ girl reader would devour it. This is a story for readers already growing in confidence, supported by plenty of illustrations that nicely complement the narrative. * Write Away *
