Dr. Rudolf Pfaendner is Head of the Department "Formulation Development and Durability" of the Fraunhofer Institute of Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF) in Darmstadt (Germany). He graduated from the University of Bayreuth (Germany) in chemistry, where he also received his Ph.D in 1985, with a thesis on electrically conducting polymers. He started his industrial career in 1985 by joining Ciba-Geigy (later Ciba Specialty Chemicals) in Lautertal (Germany) as laboratory head within the polymer research department. During 25 years he held different positions in R&D and technical marketing inter alia as Global Head of Research for the business segment "Plastic Additives". In 2004 he received the "Chairman's Award for Excellence in Commercialisation" from the Cooperative Research Centre for Polymers, Melbourne (Australia), for the development of a polyester technology. In 2008 he was appointed "Senior Research Fellow". In 2010 he joined the "German Institute for Polymers" (Deutsches Kunststoff-Institut) in Darmstadt (Germany), which is now the division "Plastics" of the Fraunhofer LBF. Dr. Rudolf Pfaendner is an expert in plastics additives and more specifically in stabilizers and in flame retardants for polymers. Main current research topics cover the development of new flame retardants for polyolefins and engineering plastics, interactions of flame retardants and stabilizers, novel permanent antistatic agents and nucleating agents. Dr. Rudolf Pfaendner is inventor/coinventor of more than 100 patents and author of 60 scientific papers and 8 book chapters.
