Vilde learns of the family secret in adulthood. Through grief and pain, she learns that the ancient folklore about the Draug, fairies, and other underground creatures was not just the good imagination of old people, but as real and alive as herself. Painted on rock walls inside hidden caves in the area once known as Hålogaland, red line figures tell of an ancient union between humans and elves, which was supposed to ensure peace between humans and the underworld. To keep the peace, specially selected members of Vilde's family, on her mother's side, have been responsible for maintaining the cave paintings with their own blood over thousands of years. She soon discovers that she has inherited the task from her mother, who died under mysterious circumstances after a visit to Lofoten when Vilde was a little girl. The knowledge that the creatures of the old folklore are still alive is not easy to share with others, and Vilde feels lonelier than ever, even though she belongs to a group of four friends who are all very close to each other. However, when her three friends get thrown into the nightmare, it's worse than she could ever have imagined.
