When Jonah Hale comes to Pual Madriani with a desperate problem, Paul knows his dream of a quiet life in San Diego must go on hold. Jonah's granddaughter Amanda is missing, snatched by her drug-addict mother with the help of the charismatic feminist leader Zolanda "Zo" Suade. Amid allegations that Jonah abused Amanda and is unfit to have custody, Paul watches his client's anger turn to rage. Then Zo is found murdered and the police immediately arrest Jonah. Even Paul can't be certain that the old man didn't do it. But when another suspect moves into the frame, someone who may also want Amanda and her mother dead, Paul finds himself on a frantic hunt to find them, as much to uncover evidence as to save lives.
