IEEE standard 802.3, Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), approved this July, standardizes broadband Ethernet, allowing service providers to focus on providing critical broadband services without worrying about interoperability conflicts. This book will annotate and explain the dense language of the standard document, taking particular care how to explain how the EFM dovetails with other standards. For engineers struggling with the standard, this book will show clearly how each piece is supposed to work in the real world.

EFM: Expertly Explained and Annotated by One of Its Developers

Meticulously written by Michael Beck, one of the standard's authors, Ethernet in the First Mile annotates and explains the complex language of the standard document. With a strong focus on how EFM dovetails with other standards in real world applications, this detailed reference is essential for readers developing new products and services, as well as for networking consultants and advanced users.

Practical and accessible, Ethernet in the First Mile includes coverage of:

  • Voice-grade copper wiring
  • Single-mode fiber optics
  • EPON
  • Security in the first mile
  • OAM and management for EFM
