A manual of good practice in the resealing of joints in buildings.
A substantial proportion of the cost of building maintenance is attributable to resealing of the external envelope, a task which is significantly more difficult than sealant installation during new build. In 1990 approximately 100,000km of building
joints were resealed in the UK at a total cost in excess of ¦500M. Indeed a greater proportion of sealant material is used in resealing than for sealing the first time. Resealing is expensive but minor savings in financial outlay may simply result in a
substantial reduction in service life, the need for early subsequent resealing and consequential high maintenance costs.
There are many reasons for resealing joints and, because of the expense and inconvenience involved, it is important to ensure that the resealing operation is successful. This comprehensive book covers all aspects of the resealing process, the reseal operation itself, quality assurance guidelines, case histories, and lessons for new build. Sections on the reseal operation cover recommendations for existing sealant removal and surface cleaning, based upon both experience and the results of detailed analytical and experimental work. Numerous examples of real problems are given which emphasize the points brought out by the text.
Guidelines are provided for the specifier for the total reseal system, including procedures for site inspection and site trials prior to defining the final specification, together with check lists and sample sheets. - The Architect's Journal, August
1994 - EASA Newsletter, December 1994 '[This book] succeeds in covering the subject comprehensively, highlighting common problems and providing constructive independent advice where possible.' - Concrete, June 1995
