Each bloom and bug in this book has gone through many incarnations and lots of trial and error over the years. My creations are not necessarily the most refined, botanically accurate, or true to size, but that's what I love about creating from scratch - there aren't any rules! With five years of flower-making under my belt, I am delighted to share my secrets and tips to crafting a whimsical handmade garden.
One of my goals for this book is to reveal techniques for crafting colourful blooms and bugs without breaking the bank - which is why I focus solely on one kind of crepe paper. You may, of course, choose to use other crepe paper alternatives, but I do love 180gsm Italian crepe paper and I hope you'll fall in love with it too!
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced paper florist, I recommend reading through the Basic Techniques chapter before starting on a project. For new crafters, you might want to practise these techniques on your own, as this will help your hands become familiar with the motions of manipulating crepe paper.
Each project has a difficulty rating from one to five, yet please do not be intimidated by this number. Projects ranked five out of five do not mean that they are super advanced and cannot be accomplished by beginners. I have added this rating more as a helpful guide in estimating the amount of time and effort that you will need for the project, since most of the techniques you will encounter are fundamentally the same across the board.
While this book has step-by-step instructions to guide you, I encourage you to step outside the box - don't be afraid to experiment and put your own stamp on your creations! The possibilities are endless, and at the end of the day, there is truly no right or wrong way to craft a bloom, bug or butterfly. I want you to know that you have a cheerleader in me, and I hope these pages offer you much joy and inspiration. If you take away nothing else from this book, know that there's an artist within you, and your hands have an amazing ability to create wonderful things.
