This briefer text provides the depth, topic coverage, and features requested by instructors teaching courses that are shorter and that include more quantitative material. The text extends best-selling author Paul Hewitt’s proven pedagogical approach, straight-forward learning features, approachable style, and rigorous coverage, while providing superior supplements and instructor and student media. The book develops a solid conceptual understanding of physics, while building students’ self-confidence applying their understanding quantitatively.

  • Concept Check questions interspersed throughout each chapter provide stopping points that let students reflect on what they have just read and test their comprehension. Answers on the same page provide instant feedback.
  • Problem-solving boxes include worked examples to help students build confidence in applying their understanding to solving quantitative problems.
  • Practicing Physics are simple hands-on activities interspersed throughout the text to underscore concepts with immediate, real-world observations.
  • Special Topics boxes provide optional in-depth sections on everyday applications, science and society, and the history of science.
  • A superior illustration program features Hewitt’s hallmark hand-drawn figures that make the physics immediately transparent to non-scientists.
  • A critically acclaimed media program is highly integrated with the text and features supporting online Interactive Figures, Interactive Tutorials, and demonstration videos that address common misconceptions.
  • End-of-chapter sections feature a summary of key terms with definitions, review questions, activities, multiple-choice questions, and exercises. One-step calculations and “show that...” quantitative problems are also included.

Biografisk notat

Paul Hewitt pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching at City College of San Francisco, with guest spots at the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught his physics course for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. His books are translated in 12 languages and used worldwide.
